Work World Radiosport Team Championship Stations Incentives

SDXA Incentives

SDXA has Awards that are for accomplishments over several months.  We also have Incentives that are focused on single contests or events.  The second SDXA Incentive is:

Work World Radiosport Team Championship Stations

In 2023 the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) will be during the IARU contest, July 8 and 9.  There will be over 40 two-person teams plus a referee for each team.  These teams are among the best HF operators in the world and should have little trouble working our SDXA stations no matter what antenna or power level you have.

Each WRTC station will have a unique Italian call sign making them easily identifiable.  They will operate both CW and SSB so regardless of your preferred mode you have a great chance to work them.

The incentive is to work the WRTC stations during the IARU contest.  Your antenna will determine how many WRTC stations you have to work to qualify for the commemorative coffee cup.

The antenna categories are:

  • End fed wires – any end fed wire or other less than 0 dB antenna.
  • Verticals – any single vertical or other 0 dB antenna.
  • Gain antennas – any form of beam, phased vertical array, or quad antenna that produces greater than 0 dB.
  • Run whatever power level you want.  There is no distinction for power level.

The number of QSOs with the WRTC stations required for each antenna category:

  • End fed wires need to make 5 band/mode contacts.
  • Verticals need to make 8 band/mode contacts.
  • Gain antennas need to make 12 band/mode contacts.

Bonus

  • Geoff Howard, W0CG/PJ2DX, will be a referee for one of the WRTC competitors.  Which one will not be known until just before the WRTC begins.
  • If you work that station and make the necessary number of QSOs, your commemorative coffee cup will have a special acknowledgment.

SDXA Incentives

SDXA has Awards (link) that are for accomplishments over several months.  We now also have Incentives that are focused on single contests or events.  The first one is Work SDXA Members at PJ2T in the CQ WPX SSB

For the CQ WPX SSB contest, March 24, 25, and 26, 2023 (PDT), Gary (AD7XG), Jay (AC7DC), and Robin (WA7CPA) will be operators at PJ2T.  Before the contest on Wednesday and Thursday, probably between 1400 and 1800 UTC and perhaps later, they will be on the air operating as PJ2/their call.  During the contest they will operate as PJ2T.

The incentive for this event will be to work them before and during the contest in order to earn a special key fob commemorating your achievement.

Here is what it takes to earn this incentive

  • Earn 3 points for each PJ2/AD7XG-type QSO during their practice sessions before the contest begins. Gary, AD7XG; Jay, AC7DC; and Robin, WA7CPA; are all good in this phase.  If you were to work each of them on all of the five bands they could be on, you would earn 45 points.
  • Earn 1 point for each PJ2T QSO during the contest for a maximum of 6 points. PJ2T should be on 160 m through 10 m.
  • If you earn at least 10 points PLUS at least one PJ2T QSO during the contest, you will qualify for a special key fob.
  • Everyone who qualifies will earn the special key fob. No winner nor top dog, just unofficial bragging rites for your score.

The special key fob will look similar to this:

Of course, your call sign will be there rather than Jay’s.
This emblem is on the outdoor wall surrounding the PJ2T compound.

SDXA ANNUAL AWARDS LISTING

Most of these awards are given out at the annual SDXA Awards Banquet by the organization in December. Some awards may be given by other organizations to our members too. Some awards are sponsored by us in third party contests.

SDXA Member of the Year (former DXER OF THE YEAR)

This award is for recognition of a SDXA member who has gone above and beyond for the club and/or it’s members. It is not to be an award for operating and doing well in contests or rare DX, etc. It likely will not be handed out every year. Club members are encouraged to nominate a member when they see someone going above and beyond. Nominations can be done by letting any of the officers know, giving justification (simple is fine) why the member is deserving.

K7TM Earns DXCC 160 Meters

Bob Hallock (K7TM) has added DXCC 160 to his achievements.  He now has 9 band DXCC. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement.

The Flounder Cup

As explained in the September meeting, the IDXA and SDXA has a difficult time competing with our DX brothers of Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. We have always just “floundered” about trying to compete with those big guns but come home empty handed when it comes time for the PNW Challenge Cup presentation. So in the spirit of a friendly and fun competion, after having dinner with Rob Fanfant, and officers of IDXA/SDXA, The Flounder Cup was created by Randy Foltz – K7TQ as a local trophy that we can compete for.

The first presentation of the Flounder Cup was at the September 5th meeting of the SDXA with our club winning the trophy for this year. The IDXA won the “Per Participant” category and certificate.

Randy (K7TQ) created a nice .pdf file (Acrobat) about the Flounder Cup and the link is below:

So lets see who wins the award for next year!

These reports are provided by Randy (K7TQ) from the IDXA after each contest.
