Many members of the SDXA entered the Salmon Run contest this year hoping to win the SDXA sponsored plaque. Unfortunately for them, the SDXA plaque was won by Gene Bye W7WMO (non-member of SDXA) again. This is Gene’s 4th win since the plaque was initiated in 2003. It was a very close race between Gene and Gary K7OX, Gene winning by only 744 points. The plaque is given for the highest score in the EWA Section running in the Single Operator, Low Power, Mixed Mode category. Gene is from Ephrata. He won it in the first two years that the plaque was offered by our organization as well as in 2007. His 2010 score was 172,264 points and 34 WA counties from a combination of 384 CW QSOs and 124 phone QSOs. He did an expedition to Ferry County for the contest. Congratulations again, Gene.

SDXA member and founder Gary K7OX won the SDXA sponsored 2005 Salmon Run plaque and took top honors including highest score in the state for a non-club entry with 170,154 points!! The plaque was for the highest score in the mixed (CW & SSB) , low power, single operator category, in the EWA Section.

Gene W7WMO had won the plaque for the last two years, putting to shame the SDXA and its club members who sponsored the plaque.

Congratulation Gary; it was a tough battle, both in the contest and having your entry “lost” in Western WA for a while. Oh, of course, Gary won Spokane County in the same category, too.

The Salmon Run is a September contest held every year. SDXA members should sharpen their antennas for that.

Another SDXA member George W6AEA made 2nd highest score from Spokane County with his 18,600 points in the same category as Gary.

The entire results are available from this WWDXC link: 2005 SALMON RUN

Here is a SHORT HISTORY LINK to the history of the contest.
———————————————————————————————————–
Dates: September 20-21, 2003

The SDXA decided to sponsor a winner’s plaque for the 2003 Salmon Run contest on September 20-21. The Salmon Run is the modern name for the annual QSO party from Washington state, sponsored by the Western Washington DX Club – W7DX. Everyone in the world tries to work Washington State hams, and we try to work everyone, especially those less populated counties in the state. Our sponsored plaque would be for the highest score for a single operator running low power in the Eastern Washington ARRL Section (EWA).

The EWA section consists of basically the 20 most Eastern counties in Washington ranging from the Canadian border to the Oregon border.

The winner was W7WMO Eugene (Gene) Bye of Ephrata, WA. As Gene said, “I was operating from a campsite at Swan Lake, south of Republic, the antenna was a dipole strung in the trees about 35 feet high and fed with open ladder 450 ohm line and antenna tuner, the rig was a battery powered IC-706. The antenna was up as high as I could get it with my fishing reel sling shot.”

The glove was thrown down to all SDXA members for next year’s contest as Gene said, “Tell the club I will be out to defend my title next year and to round up some competition for the 2004 SR.” This means that more of our SDXA members should plan to participate in the next Salmon Run and move the title closer to home. We will arrange to present the plaque to Gene in person at a future SDXA meeting if he can make it up here from Ephrata; otherwise, we will mail it to him.

Congratulations to Gene for his win of 84,416 points from Swan Lake in Ferry County.

Randy K7TQ made 62,772 points in the Single Operator, QRP, CW category and took top QRP honors for Washington State. He operated from Garfield county.

Steve K7AWB got 100 points and was top score for Spokane County. He was in the Single Operator, Low Power, Phone category.

Bill K7EFB got 260 points from Whatcom County and placed 2nd there in the Single Operator, Low Power, Mixed category.
———————————————————————————————————-
Dates: September 20-21, 2002

Steve K7AWB had high score in all categories for Spokane County with 36,848 points from 233 QSOs in the Single Operator,Low Power, Phone category.

Gary K7OX made 30,800 points from 202 QSOs in the Single Operator, Low Power, Phone category to take 2nd place in Spokane County in all categories.

Randy K7TQ had high score in all categories for Asotin County with 28,908 points from 134 QSO in the Single Operator, QRP, CW category. This made Randy top score in Eastern Washington in the QRP category.

The 43 Foot Vertical – by Dan, N5AR

The 43 foot vertical

Many different companies are joining the bandwagon and offering a 43 foot vertical antenna. This is touted to work the ham bands 160 to 10 meters. The big question is how well does it work on these bands?

Ham radio is full of stories how stations (even DX) were worked using window screens, bed springs, and even light bulbs as antennas. I helped an apartment bound blind friend use his rain trough as an antenna when he was prohibited from using even a small vertical. N6BT of Force 12 fame worked many stations using a light bulb antenna.

What is so special about a 43 foot vertical? It happens that the impedance at the feed point is in the range of 100 ohms to 300 ohms except on 80 and 160 where it is very low resulting in very poor efficiency. Use a 4 to 1 un-un and you may be able to use your xcvr internal tuner to operate. Notice I said un-un not bal-un. Some of the antennas are being supplied with a bal-un which is a serious mistake (Zero-Five). That will cause your coax outer shield to be part of the radiating antenna and couple unwanted RF into your ham shack.

This antenna is a respectable performer on 40 thru 20 meters with a good radial system. On the lower bands the very low feed point impedance and our inability to make a long enough radial system (in wavelengths) make it a very poor performer. On the bands above 20 meters the radiation angle is too high, because it is too long, making it a cloud warmer.

The best thing you can do to optimize the antenna is to put an efficient matching network at the base for each band and install a good radial system. There was a 2 part article by Salas in a recent QST which does a good job of showing how to do this. If you want to know a great deal more about this antenna, including calculated efficiency for different configurations. See the work that VK1OD did here. http://vk1od.net/antenna/multibandunloadedvertical/index.htm”
