THE REALLY EARLY DAYS of K7AWB!

Tuesday, January 1st, 2013

An Allied Radio Knight Kit T-50 Transmitter (50 watts from an 807, cw only and crystal controlled).
A Grid Modulator I built from the Handbook and it worked! Plug it into the key jack and use the microphone.
Heath Kit Q-multiplier for helping the National SW-54 Receiver (which today is really primitive!).
Home brew Power Supply for the Grid Modulator.
J-38 key.
Antenna was a long wire going out a hole in the wall below the window sill.
Notice the cup of coffee on the right side; I haven’t quit since.
Picture taken in December, 1957. That’s the month I got my Conditional License for phone and got to drop the N out of my license (KN7AWB > K7AWB.

If you have a picture from your younger days, email it to me as a jpg attachment and I’ll put it in the queue. Tell me the date, location, equipment, etc. Send to: [email protected]

THE NEW ARRL ONLINE DXCC APPLICATION PROCESS

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

My latest use of the new online application process produced the following results:

10/22 Monday: Date the envelope with my printed list of contacts was received at ARRL HQ – sent in by the local card checker
10/31 Wednesday: Date the application was processed by HQ
11/1 Thursday: Date I discovered the cards were accepted at HQ and results posted on my LOTW matrix (I checked for it every day – hihi)
11/3 Saturday: Date I received the printed DXCC Award Credit Slip with costs and results in the mail

That sure beats the old way of waiting months!! This is the only way that you can now submit cards to a local card checker or HQ; it required entering the card information into a computer database form (on the ARRL website) which is saved for your future use when you log out. I personally log each card on the form as I receive them until I make the decision to make an official card submittal through one of the three local card checkers. Here is the link to the ONLINE FORM. Try it! You will be amazed.

Randy W7TJ

Randy Crews W7TJ gave a great presentation on the poor HF propagation that we will probably experience for the rest of this sunspot cycle #24 and even into the next one #25 in 11-13 years. He used the term “Propagation Winter” to describe the predicted low activity. He also presented a handout of propagation websites that give information on what the sun is doing.

Here is a link to his PROPAGATION HANDOUT.

Thanks to Randy W7TJ for the well presented program!

2012 SALMON RUN IS OVER

Sunday, September 16th, 2012

2011 plaque — SDXA sponsored

The 2012 Salmon Run contest (Washington State QSO Party) is over and several locals were heard in the contest. There was a new rule change affecting us.

SDXA sponsors a plaque in the this contest for the high score in the Low Power, Single Operator, EWA based, Mixed Mode category. What does this category mean?

-Low Power = 100 watts or less
-Single Operator = one operator, no help from others (food delivery is OK)
-EWA based = Station must be located in the ARRL-defined EWA Section
-Mixed Mode = Mixed-mode entries make contacts using more than one mode (Phone, CW, Digital). To be eligible for an Award, a mixed-mode entry must have a minimum of 5% of the total contacts on a second or a combination of second and third modes. This is a new rule to help the small Mixed Mode entrants who previously had to make at least 10 contacts in an alternate mode.

The Salmon Run is sponsored by our friends in Seattle, the Western Washington DX Club (WWDXC). Info on the contest can be found at this SALMON RUN LINK.

Previous winners of the SDXA-sponsored plaque are:

2003-2004-2007-2010 W7WMO Gene Bye from Ephrata
2005-2006-2009 K7OX Gary Elliott from Spokane County (SDXA member)
2008 WX7P Wilse Morgan from Rice (SDXA member)
2011 W7YKM Rick Olsen (N6NR) from Tieton
2012 WILL YOU BE LISTED HERE??
