January 2008 Minutes

SDXA – january 2008

the meeting was called to order by President K7OX, Gary, at 19:00 local time.

treasurer’s report by K7EKM, Kirk:

total: $1971.39 + all the dues coming in tonight

secretary’s report by wa0www, jay:

minutes for November are not available

old business:

= DX’er of the year award was given out to WA1PMA, Wayne, at the banquet. this is a new award for the club and is for recognition of someone that has gone above and beyond for the club or it’s members. it is not to be an award for operating and doing well in contests or rare DX, etc. it likely will not be handed out every year. club members are encouraged to nominate a member when they see someone going above and beyond. nominations can be done by letting any of the officers know and would mean much more if there is some justification (simple is fine) why the member is deserving.

new business:

= dues are due tonight. the constitution:
“Any member not remitting dues by the March meeting will be dropped from the membership roster. “

= K7OX, Gary, read the letter from K7EFX, John A Brackemyre. the lead into the letter:

“I would like to recognize four hams (WA7LT, W7KLL. N5AR and K7EKM ) in the SDXA that have been instrumental in stimulating and assisting in my growth in amateur radio. I choose to do so by instituting a fund in their names, this fund to be used to encourage new hams of any age to participate in DX and Contesting activities as an outreach of SDXA and a recruiting tool. Enclosed please find a check for $200.00 as start up funds for this endeavor.” (thank you John!)

we had a discussion about setting up a separate fund for this and is it worthwhile. K7EKM, Kirk, commented it would be easy in the club’s books to identify specific funds for this. all felt this was a great idea and we came to call it the ‘Brackemyre Fund’. a couple of comments:
– maybe we can do something to have a stronger connection to the U-High club.
– anyone can donate to the fund to help build it up more.
– any expenditures will be brought before the club.
– using the funds for larger equipment will need more discussion, however for study material or smaller items seems to fit nicely.
WA1PMA, Wayne, moved for the club to set up this fund as discussed, W6AEA, George seconded. the motion passed.

= a point was brought up that we need to look at advertising the club, e.g. a tri-fold that can be handed out at other ham events could work nicely. K7EKM, Kirk, could get them printed very cost effectively. we should have a copy on the web page also. we will discuss more on this in future meetings.

= new membership
it would be nice to know when new hams move into the area.
 wa0www – check with Mark and other local ARRL officials to see if there is a way to be notified from the ARRL when hams move into the area or new hams join the ARRL in the area.

= WX7P, Wilse, sent to the club a copy of the Post Office notice about IRCs have increased from $1.85 to $2 bucks. this notice explained how to add this additional 15cents. wa0www has scanned it in and uploaded to our Google group site.

= the big new business is, the SDXA has been specifically approached by the big-3 DX clubs on the west side (WV-Portland, WWDX-Seattle and BCDX-Vancouver, BC), about becoming a 4th member and to host the annual NW DX Convention in rotation with them. we had lots of good discussion on this. some points brought out:
– the 3 current clubs feel the convention etc, needs some new life and to expand.
– being on the east side, it will bring in hams and more input from Alberta, MT, ID, Eastern OR and EWA
– the 3 clubs are very willing to help us get going. we need to get their database and anything else they can provide us.
– it should be a money maker in the end. currently 100-110 attend the current conventions. the full registration does cover the basic meals.
– generally the big door prize (e.g. 756proIII) has been donated. still need to consider the other hourly and smaller prizes. (side comment is any door prices need to be HF related.)
– it looks like the initial expenditures are not too bad and not much.
– K7EKM, Kirk, has talk to the Mirabeau park hotel at Sullivan and I-90 just to get some ideas. sounds like they are very good in prices, facilities, rooms, we can pay at the end, etc. Kirk will check on a couple more places, assuming we approve to move forward.
– we see somewhere around 5 or 6 main committees. we need to settle on them and get some committee chairs. we will still need others to help out on these committees and in general.
– when we get closer we should have a specific page on the club’s web site for it.
– generally this convention is not big on exhibitors, it is the sessions on different topics that draw the attendees and keep them occupied. sounds like about 10 programs and most of the speakers are locals to the other clubs.
– oh yes, when? considering the current rotation and the desire of the BCDX/Vancouver club to have it there in 2010 to coincide with the Olympics, that means our turn will be early August 2009.

– K7AWB, Steve, moved that we accept and host the 2009 NW DX convention in Spokane. WU7X, Dale, seconded. the motion passed.

– initial volunteers: K7OX, K7TQ, W7EKM, WA0WWW, KC7QGV (welcome packets) and WU7X after 01jan09.

program: video on the DXpedition to Kingman Reef. (it was excellent)

future agenda suggestions, anyone else have any?:
– newsletter
– (continue on) tri-fold brochure promoting the club
– club QSL cards
– a better way to announce to the member upcoming contests and DX stations. timely that is.

respectfully submitted by wa0www jay holcomb, secretary.
