Gene W7WMO had won the plaque for the last two years, putting to shame the SDXA and its club members who sponsored the plaque.

Congratulation Gary; it was a tough battle, both in the contest and having your entry “lost” in Western WA for a while. Oh, of course, Gary won Spokane County in the same category, too.

The Salmon Run is a September contest held every year. SDXA members should sharpen their antennas for that.

Another SDXA member George W6AEA made 2nd highest score from Spokane County with his 18,600 points in the same category as Gary.

———————————————————————————————————–
Dates: September 20-21, 2003

The SDXA decided to sponsor a winner’s plaque for the 2003 Salmon Run contest on September 20-21. The Salmon Run is the modern name for the annual QSO party from Washington state, sponsored by the Western Washington DX Club – W7DX. Everyone in the world tries to work Washington State hams, and we try to work everyone, especially those less populated counties in the state. Our sponsored plaque would be for the highest score for a single operator running low power in the Eastern Washington ARRL Section (EWA).

The EWA section consists of basically the 20 most Eastern counties in Washington ranging from the Canadian border to the Oregon border.

The winner was W7WMO Eugene (Gene) Bye of Ephrata, WA. As Gene said, “I was operating from a campsite at Swan Lake, south of Republic, the antenna was a dipole strung in the trees about 35 feet high and fed with open ladder 450 ohm line and antenna tuner, the rig was a battery powered IC-706. The antenna was up as high as I could get it with my fishing reel sling shot.”

The glove was thrown down to all SDXA members for next year’s contest as Gene said, “Tell the club I will be out to defend my title next year and to round up some competition for the 2004 SR.” This means that more of our SDXA members should plan to participate in the next Salmon Run and move the title closer to home. We will arrange to present the plaque to Gene in person at a future SDXA meeting if he can make it up here from Ephrata; otherwise, we will mail it to him.

Congratulations to Gene for his win of 84,416 points from Swan Lake in Ferry County.

Randy K7TQ made 62,772 points in the Single Operator, QRP, CW category and took top QRP honors for Washington State. He operated from Garfield county.

Steve K7AWB got 100 points and was top score for Spokane County. He was in the Single Operator, Low Power, Phone category.

Bill K7EFB got 260 points from Whatcom County and placed 2nd there in the Single Operator, Low Power, Mixed category.
